Understanding food contamination & adulteration

Food is a basic need in our life. But have you ever thought about whether the food we eat is really safe? While we all enjoy tasty meals not many of us are fully aware of things like food contamination & adulteration. These are the two major issues that can affect our health.

What is Food Contamination?

Food contamination happens when harmful substances get in to our food, either during processing, cooking or even storage. These can include bacteria, virus, chemicals, or even dirt. For example, if fruits & vegetables are not washed properly or if cooked food is stored in dirty containers or left uncovered, it can become contaminated & cause food poisoning.

What is Food Adulteration?

Adulteration is when something is intentionally added to food to increase quantity or make it look better. But this makes the food unhealthy or even dangerous. For example, adding water to milk, mixing brick powder in chilli powder, or using artificial colours in sweets. These may look normal, but they are not safe for us at all.

How Can We Protect Ourselves?

Always buy from trusted sources

Check labels & expiry dates

Wash fruits & vegetables properly

Be aware of common food fraud tricks

Conclusion

Our health depends a lot on the quality of the food we consume. By staying informed & careful.
